Biogradska gora National Park

Biogradska gora National Park was founded in 1952. Located in the area of northeastern Montenegro, between the rivers Lim and Morača, in the central part of the mountain Bjelasica, it covers an area of 5,650 hectares. Bordered by mountain heights, intersected by streams and coves, decorated with beautiful lakes, adorned with centuries-old forests and gentle meadows, it is a magnificent gift of nature. There are features of all places, landscapes, regions, something like a matrix; in a narrower sense related to the cities by which we recognize them; or that unfathomable magic of perfect harmony of nature which is necessarily accompanied by mysterious creations. So, if we find ourselves in the central part, in the heart of Montenegro, not far from Pljevlja, our life will suddenly become more exciting, because from the top of Durmitor we can suddenly see the whole of Montenegro in the palm of our hand. In just a few hours of walking we will find ourselves in the Biogradska gora National Park - in one of the last three rainforests in Europe, and if we dare to step a little deeper into the depths of the mountain, we will come across the most beautiful: the emerald colors of beautiful Biograd Lake. We will quickly realize that everything is in place: centuries-old forests, colorful flowers, and the legend of the origin of the lake, which from ancient times tells that fairies used to be and led the wheel on the threshing floor, which is today its shallowest part. In the place where it is shallow today, there used to be a common field of two brothers. In an argument that arose during the division of grain in the threshing floor, the younger brother kills the older one. Broken by pain, the mother cursed her son, and by the force of her curse the ground broke in the place where the field was, and thus a lake was created.

But there is also something tailored to the fairies - far from the public eye, beautiful and moody. Its protection dates back to 1878, when this territory became the Prince's ban, a gift to the then master of Montenegro, Prince Nikola. The landscape is extremely tame, with a dominant green color due to the vastness of unique forest ecosystems, which are replaced by picturesque landscapes with meadow vegetation. Glacial landforms such as peaks over 1000 meters high (Crna glava - 1,069 - {m} -) and glacial waves and circuses, with several glacial lakes, give the landscape a unique beauty. The clear lake water reflects all the beauty of the ancient forest, at a length of about a thousand and an average width of about four hundred meters, giving a blue-green color to the almost transparent water, especially its northern part of the shore, which is also called Capricorn. How unreal they look in the reflection of glassy water are giant beech trees that are over five hundred years old, with a diameter of over 150 cm and a height of up to 50 m. The most significant natural value of this national park is the Biogradska gora rainforest, which covers an area of as much as 4,500 hectares and is one of the last three in Europe. It has the character of a strictly protected reservoir. The green lungs of this part of the Balkans are located between the rivers Tara and Lima. The rainforest was donated to Prince Nikola in 1878 and has been under state protection ever since. It is harmoniously shared by 26 plant communities, more than 200 species of birds, and many wild animals have found a home in it. In the heart of the rainforest is the beautiful Lake Biograd, the largest and most famous in a series of glacial lakes in the national park. All the beauty of the ancient forest is reflected in the clear lake water, giving it a blue-green color and making the landscape such that it leaves the impression of a deep impression.
