Ada Bojana

Ada Bojana was created, according to the legend, so that in the 17th or 19th century, after a storm, the sailing ship 'Merito' ran aground near two smaller islands. River sediment has been deposited for years on the wreck of this ship and two nearby islands, which first formed a reef and then an island. In time, this island divided the river Bojana into two branches. During the Cold War, Ada was a military zone with a strictly guarded border. Due to that, some parts of it have remained completely intact even today. Ada Bojana has the shape of a triangle. On one side it was flooded by the Adriatic Sea, and on the other two by the river Bojana. The beach facing the sea is sandy and is about 3 km long. The beach and seabed are covered with fine sand. The right branch of the river Bojana separates the island from Ulcinj's Velika plaža, 13 km long. The nearest place is the village of Stoj, or the town of Ulcinj. Ada Bojana is adorned with subtropical and Mediterranean plants, and some plant and animal species are unique in Europe. It is the dense and lush vegetation that gives Adi the charm of the Amazon and together with the unusual fauna turns it into a special micro-ecological space. The hinterland of the beach consists of dunes behind which there are unique habitats throughout the Mediterranean. The ornithological significance of Ada Bojana is reflected primarily in the significant colonies of many species of nesting birds, among others: spoons, little egret, gray heron, yellow heron, etc.
